Innovation Through Listening
As a leader in the marine industry, Tiara Yachts has long prioritized customer feedback throughout the new product development process, ensuring every innovation is shaped by real-world boating experiences. That commitment to listening and learning from owners has helped establish Tiara as a respected leader in the marine industry and a trusted development partner for Mercury Marine.
When Mercury began developing its newest 400-horsepower platform, it relied on Tiara’s expertise and customer-focused perspective to help evaluate and refine the product. Since entering the outboard market, Tiara has consistently pushed the premium segment forward, and its partnership with Mercury continues to provide valuable market insights that support the development of innovative, customer-driven products.
The Digital Throttle & Shift System
A key component in Mercury engine packages, Mercury’s Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), provides smooth handling, quiet shifting and immediate and precise throttle response. The DTS system sends a digital position signal, which the engine interprets and provides throttle response. DTS also unlocks additional features, including Joystick Piloting and Autopilot.
The Joystick Piloting System
Joystick Piloting simplifies one of boating's most challenging tasks: docking. This system delivers intuitive, effortless docking by seamlessly integrating throttle, steering, and shifting into a single control system. This gives captains precise fingertip control, allowing them to maneuver their vessel with confidence in a variety of docking and close-quarters situations.
Rather than relying on traditional steering inputs, operators can command 360-degree movement simply by rotating the joystick, while sideways translation is achieved by pushing the joystick laterally.
A key component of this system is the integration of the bow thruster into Mercury’s Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) platform. The bow thruster is a small sideways-mounted propeller located in the bow below the waterline. By directing water to either side, it moves the bow in the opposite direction, making low-speed maneuvering in tight spaces significantly easier. Traditionally, the bow thruster is operated independently through dedicated buttons or a separate control interface.
By integrating the bow thruster into the same joystick, captains gain a more seamless and responsive boating experience. Instead of managing multiple control systems to coordinate bow and stern movement, operators can control the entire vessel through a single interface, resulting in greater precision, simplicity, and confidence at the helm.
Electric Steering System
For years, hydraulic steering systems have been the industry standard, delivering reliable performance on the water. Mercury's Electric Steering builds on that foundation with a range of advantages that enhance both vessel operation and onboard efficiency.
One of the most significant benefits is responsiveness. Electric actuators react more quickly than traditional electro-hydraulic systems, resulting in more precise steering inputs, smoother maneuvering, and improved overall handling.
Electric Steering also offers greater efficiency by reducing power consumption. Conventional electro-hydraulic systems continuously run a hydraulic pump to maintain system pressure, regardless of whether steering input is being applied. In contrast, Electric Steering only draws power when needed, leaving more of the engine's alternator output available for onboard systems and accessories.
Additionally, the system eliminates the need for hydraulic components throughout the vessel, including pumps, hoses, and hydraulic fluid. This simplifies rigging, creates a cleaner transom layout, and reduces overall system complexity while maintaining exceptional steering performance.
The result is a steering system that is more responsive, more efficient, and easier to integrate, delivering a cleaner installation and an enhanced boating experience.
Active Trim System
The Active Trim system addresses a common challenge for many captains: finding and maintaining the optimal engine trim angle. Instead of relying on trial and error, the system continuously adjusts trim settings to help maximize performance and efficiency.
When a boat is over-trimmed, the propeller can lose its grip on the water, introducing air into the system, causing RPM spikes, and leading to porpoising. Conversely, an under-trimmed engine creates excess drag, reducing efficiency, slowing performance, and increasing fuel consumption.
Active Trim automatically adjusts engine trim based on inputs such as engine RPM, GPS speed, and engine load. By optimizing trim throughout varying operating conditions, the system enhances ride quality, improves fuel economy, and helps maintain stability.
For captains who prefer a customized experience, Active Trim offers five selectable profile settings and can be overridden at any time if the captain would like to trim by intuition instead.
VesselView Display System
Mercury didn’t leave visibility into these systems to chance. Alongside these features, you’ll find the Mercury VesselView display system.
It not only provides essential information about the engine, such as fuel flow, fuel efficiency, engine hours, RPM, trim settings, and speed, but also puts the controls themselves on the screen.
The ability to control Active Trim, engage Autopilot, and access the Joystick’s advanced features is at the captain’s fingertips, instead of scattered across the helm.
The Reverso System
While Mercury's latest innovations continue to enhance the boating experience, proper maintenance remains essential to preserving long-term engine performance and reliability. One of the most important maintenance practices for outboard engines is routine freshwater flushing, which helps protect internal components and extend engine life.
Traditionally, flushing an outboard engine after a day on the water requires connecting a hose to each engine individually. Mercury's latest V10 and V12 Verado platforms simplify this process by enabling integration with an automated flushing system through the rigging tube.
Known as the Reverso flushing system, this technology streamlines routine engine care. Captains can connect a hose at the dock, activate the system with the push of a button, and automatically flush both engines simultaneously. On models such as the Tiara Yachts 35 LS, this eliminates the need to manually connect and monitor each engine separately, making post-cruise maintenance faster, more convenient, and more efficient.
By simplifying a critical maintenance task, the Reverso system helps owners spend less time on upkeep and more time enjoying their time on the water.
Noise, Vibration, and Harshness
While Mercury has long been recognized for exceptional performance, every new engine reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the overall boating experience. Like Tiara Yachts, Mercury understands that the true value of innovation is not found in the technology itself, but in how it enriches time spent on the water. Every feature, system, and engineering advancement is ultimately designed to support that experience.
Both Tiara and Mercury know that claims of industry-leading performance must be backed by measurable results. That commitment to engineering excellence is evident in Mercury's ongoing efforts to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), key factors that influence comfort and enjoyment on board.
By minimizing engine noise and vibration, Mercury has created a more refined boating experience, allowing owners and guests to fully enjoy every space on board. Conversations flow more naturally, entertainment areas feel more inviting, and long days on the water become more comfortable without the constant presence of engine noise in the background.
According to Mercury, the 425hp V10 Verado is 22% quieter at cruising speeds and 40% quieter at wide-open throttle than the leading high-horsepower competitor. These advancements help create a more immersive on-water experience, one where the focus remains on the destination, the surroundings, and the people sharing the journey.
For Tiara owners, a boat is more than a means of transportation. It is a place to connect, entertain, and create lasting memories. While the engineering behind NVH reduction may go unnoticed, its impact is felt throughout every moment on board, quietly enhancing the experience without demanding attention to itself.
